Stay calm and assess
A sudden fever in an elderly family member can be worrying, especially at night. Staying calm helps you think clearly and keeps the person comfortable. Fever itself is a symptom, not a diagnosis — it means the body is responding to something, often a common infection.
Start by checking how the person feels overall. Are they alert and able to talk, or confused and drowsy? Can they drink fluids? Is their breathing normal? These observations help you decide how quickly to act.
Comfortable, supportive care at home
While you arrange medical advice, keep the person comfortable. Offer small sips of water or oral rehydration fluids frequently to prevent dehydration. Keep the room well-ventilated and avoid over-bundling in heavy blankets, which can trap heat.
A lukewarm sponge on the forehead and limbs can be soothing. Note the time you first noticed the fever and any other symptoms — this is useful information for a doctor.
When to arrange a doctor at home
For a stable older adult with a mild fever and no danger signs, a non-emergency doctor home visit can be a practical next step. A qualified physician can assess the cause, advise on care, and arrange medicines or lab tests if needed.
DrGharpe offers on-call MBBS and MD doctor home visits across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, available 24×7 for non-emergency situations.
Warning signs — seek emergency care immediately
Some symptoms are not safe for home care and need emergency services. Call 108 or go to the nearest hospital immediately if the person has:
difficulty breathing or chest pain; confusion, drowsiness or inability to respond; a very high fever with stiff neck or severe headache; persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down; bluish lips or face; or a seizure.
These are emergencies. A home doctor visit is not a substitute for emergency services in these situations.
